OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER/OCD TREATMENT AT PSYCHE CLINIC ON HARLEY STREET

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is one of the most frequently misunderstood mental health conditions. Far from being a personality quirk or a desire for cleanliness, OCD is now recognised as a chronic condition that affects brain function, thought patterns, behaviour, and emotional regulation.

OCD involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) that are performed to reduce anxiety or prevent feared outcomes. These patterns can become deeply distressing and time-consuming, significantly interfering with daily life.

OCD often co-occurs with other mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or neurodevelopmental issues like ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

There is growing awareness of OCD, yet many people still face stigma, misdiagnosis, or internalised shame. While the content of obsessions may vary—from fears of harm to contamination to moral or existential doubts—the underlying vulnerabilities—intolerance of uncertainty, emotional distress, and a strong need for control—have long been present. What has evolved is our understanding of OCD as a treatable condition requiring specialised care.

OUR APPROACH TO OCD ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT

At the Psyche Clinic we are lucky to have amongst our team UK clinical experts in the treatment of OCD. Some of our clinical team have worked in UK national quaternary specialist OCD treatment units with extensive specialist training and experience in treating OCD if all severities.

You will receive a thorough psychiatric and psychological assessment to understand the full picture—not just the intrusive thoughts or repetitive behaviours, but also the emotional, cognitive, and relational factors that may be driving them.

We recognise that OCD rarely exists in isolation. Our assessments explore the presence of co-occurring conditions such as anxietydepressiontraumaADHD, or autistic traits, which can complicate and intensify obsessive-compulsive patterns.

EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT TAILORED TO YOU

Treatment is highly individualised and may include psychiatric input, structured psychological therapy, and practical tools for managing compulsions, tolerating uncertainty, and challenging obsessive thinking.

The majority of patients with OCD are able to be successfully treated as outpatients with a combination of specialist Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) including Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)  and medications such as SSRIs and possibly other medications if severe.

For the most severe cases which have not responded to previous trials of treatment elsewhere we are able to offer specialist inpatient treatment at the UK specialist OCD service at The Nightingale Hospital.
