ANXIETY TREATMENT AT
PSYCHE CLINIC ON HARLEY STREET

Anxiety is one of the most common mental health concerns, yet it remains deeply misunderstood. Rather than simply being a case of worry or nervousness, anxiety is now recognised as a complex condition that affects brain function, emotional regulation, and physical health.

Anxiety can take many forms—including generalised anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, or specific phobias—and can impact sleep, concentration, relationships, and overall quality of life. It often co-occurs with other mental health challenges such as depression, trauma, or neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

OUR APPROACH TO ANXIETY ASSESSMENT & TREATMENT

At Psyche Clinic, we take a comprehensive and compassionate approach to assessing and treating anxiety. Every client begins with a thorough psychiatric and psychological assessment to understand the full picture—not just the symptoms of worry or fear, but also the emotional, cognitive, and relational factors that contribute to and maintain anxiety.

We recognise that anxiety often coexists with other conditions. Our assessments carefully consider the presence of co-occurring issues such as trauma, depression, ADHD, or perfectionistic tendencies, all of which can heighten sensitivity to stress and uncertainty.

Treatment is highly individualised and may include psychiatric support, structured psychological therapy, and practical tools for managing physical symptoms, intrusive thoughts, and avoidance behaviours. Where appropriate, we work collaboratively with GPs, other healthcare professionals, or support networks to ensure continuity of care.

Our aim is not just to reduce anxiety—but to help individuals understand its origins, develop resilience, and regain a sense of calm, confidence, and emotional balance in daily life.

Anxiety and stress are easiest thought of as when are brain’s awareness to potential danger is heightened. As such the ‘fight or flight’ system is in overdrive. In addition to the emotionally experienced anxiety a person may have associated physical symptoms of dry mouth, clammy skin, tight chest, shortness of breathe, racing heart, muscular tension, needing to go to the toilet more frequently or muscle tension.

Some people may experience sudden bursts of severe anxiety lasting seconds or minutes with accompanying sense of dread, or dizziness or shortness of breathe. These are panic attacks and may be mistaken for a heart attack.

As clinicians we see may patients who have lived with anxiety for many years without seeking help but anxiety and panic are relatively straightforward to treat successfully.
