MID LIFE CRISIS TREATMENT AT PSYCHE CLINIC ON HARLEY STREET
Whilst the term is often used in a disparaging way the midlife crisis is just a normal stage of maturation in the life cycle.
As children we understand the world as told to us by parents and teachers. In our teens we begin to question what we were lead to believe. In our 20s and 30s we are tryiing to establish ourselves as adults and may be busy training and working our way up in a chosen career. Then somewhere between our middle years (around late 3os to 50s) we find ourselves able to be less busy trying to establish ourselves, we may be settled in a relationship, we may have started a family and we may know people our own age who have already died. Our childhood sense of omnipotent immortality is challenged and we are made aware that our own lives are limited.
It is when this stage is reached that we may ask ourselves “is this it?” “Is there anything else I want to experience in life” “am I happy doing what I’m doing for the rest of my days?”. It is following these questions that we may decide to shake things up, make changes to our lives including our work, our relationships, or what we spend our time doing. These may be positive changes to ourselves but may be experienced by those living close to us as problematic and hence the term ‘crisis’. In reality a midlife crisis is better understood as a meaningful response to changes in one’s sense of self, purpose, and life direction.
OUR APPROACH TO MID-LIFE CRISIS ASSESSMENT AND TREATMENT
At the Psyche Clinic, we take a comprehensive and non-judgemental approach to understanding and supporting individuals experiencing a midlife crisis. Every client begins with a thorough psychiatric and psychological assessment to explore the full picture—not just the external changes or distress, but also the deeper emotional, cognitive, and relational shifts that may be occurring.
We recognise that a midlife crisis rarely occurs in isolation. Our assessments consider the presence of co-occurring factors such as depression, anxiety, trauma, burnout, relationship difficulties, or neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD, which can all contribute to a sense of emotional disruption or loss of direction.
Treatment is highly individualised and may include psychiatric input, structured psychological therapy, and space to explore identity, values, life transitions, and future goals. Where appropriate, we also work collaboratively with GPs, other healthcare providers, or support systems to ensure integrated and sustained care.
Our aim is not simply to reduce distress—but to help individuals make sense of this complex life stage, address underlying concerns, and move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and a renewed sense of purpose.
EVIDENCE-BASED TREATMENT TAILORED TO YOU
Our treatment plans for individuals navigating a midlife crisis are tailored to the unique challenges of this life stage, drawing on a range of evidence-based approaches designed to support emotional clarity, resilience, and personal growth. Depending on your needs, therapy may focus on exploring identity shifts, processing regrets or life transitions, and addressing any co-occurring psychological conditions.
We offer a combination of:
-
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help identify and shift unhelpful patterns of thinking, behaviour, or self-criticism
-
Existential or Meaning-Centred Therapy to explore questions of purpose, ageing, and life satisfaction
-
Trauma-Informed Therapy for those whose midlife crisis is shaped by unresolved emotional wounds or past experiences
-
Life Transition and Values Work to clarify direction, goals, and priorities in this new stage of life
-
Psychiatric Support, where appropriate, to address symptoms of depression, anxiety, or related conditions
All treatment is delivered in a discreet, supportive environment by experienced clinicians who understand the emotional complexity of midlife. Whether you are feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or simply unsure of what comes next, our goal is to meet you where you are and support you in finding renewed meaning, balance, and direction.
