Depression

Depression is one of the most common and misunderstood mental health conditions. It goes far beyond sadness or low mood and is now recognised as a complex condition that affects brain chemistry, behaviour, and emotional regulation in addition to being a systemic physical  illness affecting many bodily systems.

Depression can take many forms—from persistent low mood and fatigue to loss of interest, feelings of worthlessness, and difficulty functioning in day-to-day life. It may be triggered by stressful life events, physical health issues, or emerge gradually without a clear cause. It also frequently co-occurs with other mental health conditions such as anxietytrauma, or neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

There is increasing awareness of how widespread depression is, especially in the wake of global stressors, social disconnection, and workplace pressures. While some aspects of modern life may intensify the experience, the underlying vulnerabilities—emotional sensitivity, low self-worth, unresolved trauma—have long existed. What is changing is how openly we speak about depression and how seriously it is taken.

With the right clinical support and a compassionate, evidence-based approach, it is entirely possible to recover a sense of purpose, connection, and wellbeing.

Our Approach to Depression Assessment and Treatment

At the Psyche Clinic, we take a comprehensive and compassionate approach to assessing and treating depression. Every client begins with a detailed psychiatric and psychological assessment to understand the full picture—not just the current symptoms, but also the emotional, cognitive, and relational factors contributing to their experience.

There are different levels of severity of depression ranging from mild to moderate to severe. It is best to treat depression early before it develops to a more severe extent but all levels of severity are able to be treated using an evidence based treatment plan.

Treatment is highly individualised and may include psychiatric care, structured psychological therapy, and practical strategies to support daily functioning, emotional regulation, and long-term recovery. Where appropriate, we also collaborate with GPs, other healthcare professionals, or support networks to ensure joined-up care.

Our aim is not simply to alleviate symptoms—but to help individuals make sense of their experience, address the root causes, and support a meaningful return to vitality, self-worth, and connection.

Evidence-Based Treatment Tailored to You

Our treatment plans for depression are tailored to the individual, drawing on a range of evidence-based approaches designed to support lasting recovery and emotional wellbeing.

Treatment may include:

  • Talking therapies ranging from counselling to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or Psychotherapy

Medication may not be needed for mild forms of depression but when it is more severe and usually presenting along with physical features of changes in sleep, appetite, concentration, energy levels and motivation or where there are marked feelings of hopeless and distorted negative thinking then medication may be needed.

Antidepressants are safe effective treatments which are not addictive and do not form dependency and have a low level of side effects and if side effects are experienced then usually an alternive one is able to be found which is both effective and tolerated.

All treatment is delivered in a discreet, supportive environment by experienced clinicians who understand the nuances of depression. Whether you’re experiencing a first episode or managing a long-standing condition, our aim is to meet you with empathy and expertise—helping you regain clarity, connection, and a renewed sense of self.
