Addictions

Addictions are among the most complex and challenging conditions to treat. Rather than being a matter of willpower or moral failing, addiction is now recognised as a chronic condition that affects brain function, behaviour, and emotional regulation.

Addiction can involve substances such as alcohol, cocaine, or prescription medication, as well as behaviours like gambling, sex, or compulsive internet use. It often co-occurs with other mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorders.

There is ongoing debate about whether addiction is becoming more prevalent. While patterns of use may have shifted over time, the underlying vulnerabilities—emotional pain, disconnection, and difficulties with self-regulation—have long existed. What has changed is the way society understands and responds to addiction.

Many individuals who were previously seen as reckless or self-destructive are now better understood as people using substances or behaviours to manage overwhelming emotions or distress. With the right clinical support and a non-judgmental approach, it is possible to break the cycle and begin the process of recovery.

Our Approach to Addiction Assessment and Treatment

At Psyche Clinic, we take a comprehensive and non-judgemental approach to assessing and treating addiction. Every client begins with a thorough psychiatric and psychological assessment to understand the full picture—not just the presenting behaviour, but also the underlying emotional, cognitive, and relational factors contributing to it.

We recognise that addiction rarely exists in isolation. Our assessments explore the presence of co-occurring conditions such as trauma, anxiety, depression, ADHD, or personality difficulties, which often play a significant role in the development and maintenance of addictive patterns.

Treatment is highly individualised and may include psychiatric input, structured psychological therapy, and guidance around harm reduction, relapse prevention, and lifestyle stabilisation. Where appropriate, we also work collaboratively with GPs, other healthcare providers, and support services to ensure continuity of care.

Our aim is not just to stop the addictive behaviour—but to help individuals understand what purpose it served, address the underlying distress, and build healthier, more sustainable coping mechanisms.

Evidence-Based Treatment Tailored to You

Our addiction treatment plans are tailored to each individual, drawing on a range of evidence-based approaches designed to support long-term recovery. Depending on your needs, therapy may focus on understanding the function of the addiction, developing healthier coping strategies, and addressing any co-occurring psychological conditions.

We offer a combination of:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help identify and change unhelpful patterns of thinking and behaviour

  • Motivational Interviewing (MI) to explore ambivalence and strengthen commitment to change

  • Trauma-Informed Therapy for those whose addiction is rooted in past adverse experiences

  • Relapse Prevention Planning to manage triggers, strengthen resilience, and maintain progress

  • Psychiatric Support, where appropriate, for medication management or dual diagnosis

All treatment is delivered in a discreet, supportive environment by experienced clinicians who understand the complexities of addiction. Whether you're seeking help for the first time or returning after a relapse, our goal is to meet you where you are and support you in moving forward.
