Bipolar

Bipolar disorder is a complex and often misunderstood mental health condition. Rather than being a matter of moodiness or instability, it is now recognised as a chronic condition that affects brain function, energy levels, emotional regulation, and behaviour.

Bipolar disorder typically involves episodes of depression and elevated mood, which may include hypomania or full mania. These shifts can impact sleep, decision-making, motivation, and relationships. The condition exists on a spectrum and often co-occurs with other mental health challenges such as anxiety, trauma, ADHD, or substance use.

There is growing awareness around bipolar disorder, but misconceptions persist. While public understanding has improved, many people still face stigma, delayed diagnosis, or inappropriate treatment. What’s often overlooked is that beneath the mood fluctuations are deep emotional sensitivities, a drive for meaning, and challenges in managing stress or overstimulation.

Many individuals who were once labelled as erratic, irresponsible, or overly emotional are now recognised as living with a treatable condition that deserves empathy and clinical expertise. With the right diagnosis, support, and ongoing care, people with bipolar disorder can stabilise, thrive, and lead rich, fulfilling lives.

Our Approach to Bipolar Assessment and Treatment

At Psyche Clinic, we take a comprehensive and compassionate approach to assessing and treating bipolar disorder. Every client begins with a detailed psychiatric and psychological assessment to build a clear understanding of their experience—not just the pattern of mood changes, but also the emotional, cognitive, and relational factors that shape them.

We recognise that bipolar disorder often coexists with other conditions. Our assessments carefully explore the presence of co-occurring issues such as anxiety, trauma, ADHD, or difficulties with emotional regulation, all of which can influence the course and expression of bipolar symptoms.

Treatment is tailored to the individual and may include psychiatric support for mood stabilisation, structured psychological therapy to improve emotional insight and coping strategies, and lifestyle guidance to help manage triggers and promote long-term stability. When appropriate, we also coordinate care with GPs, psychiatrists, or other services to ensure ongoing support.

Our goal is not just to manage episodes of mania or depression—but to help individuals better understand their experience, reduce distress, and develop tools for a more balanced, meaningful life.

Evidence-Based Treatment Tailored to You

Our treatment plans for bipolar disorder are tailored to the individual, drawing on a range of evidence-based approaches designed to support long-term mood stability and emotional wellbeing. Depending on your needs, therapy may focus on understanding mood patterns, improving emotional regulation, and addressing any co-occurring psychological conditions.

We offer a combination of:

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help identify and manage the thoughts and behaviours that contribute to mood instability

  • Psychoeducation to increase awareness of bipolar symptoms, triggers, and early warning signs

  • Trauma-Informed Therapy for those whose mood shifts are influenced by past adverse experiences

  • Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy (IPSRT) to stabilise daily routines and improve relationships, which play a key role in managing bipolar symptoms

  • Psychiatric Support, where appropriate, for medication management and ongoing psychiatric oversight

All treatment is delivered in a discreet, supportive environment by experienced clinicians who understand the complexities of bipolar disorder. Whether you are newly diagnosed or seeking more effective, integrated care, our goal is to help you achieve greater balance, resilience, and a renewed sense of self.
